Q and A - Workout World fitness consultant Mark Bentwitch

Many Australians are confused by myths surrounding effective weight loss. Every day, Workout World Brookvale store manager and fitness consultant Mark Bentwitch works hard to dispel these myths and put customers on the path towards positive, realistic health and fitness habits that will last a lifetime.

Q. What qualifications do you need to be a fitness equipment specialist?
I am a qualified gym instructor with a Certificate III in Fitness, which means I can help customers find fitness equipment suited to their health and fitness goals.

Q. What are some of the most commonly asked questions from customers?
Often customers ask for an Abdominal Roller or a medicine ball so they can reduce their waist size. Many people don't realise that the only way to achieve a smaller waistline is through cardiovascular exercise! Treadmills, cross trainers or a Cardio Gym are good examples of equipment that gives you a cardiovascular workout. Another common question I get asked is ‘How do I achieve weight loss?' One of the most effective ways to lose weight is combining cardiovascular and strength training. Using a treadmill (for cardiovascular exercise) and a home gym (for strength training, e.g. lifting weights) is a good example.

Cardio Gym that lets you perform both cardio and strength training in the one device - simultaneously - cutting your workout time in half! Workout World set up www.cardiogym.com to demonstrate the benefits of this effective, proven piece of fitness equipment.

Q. Why is buying fitness equipment from a specialist so important?
If you walked into a computer store with little idea about what to buy, bought the cheapest item, took it home and opened the box you would have no clue about how to use it! How frustrating and confusing would that experience be!

The same principles apply when buying fitness equipment. If you want to get fit and healthy and arm yourself with the right advice, it makes sense to choose a qualified specialist who is passionate about fitness, and knows which equipment is going to get you the results.

Q. How important is choosing quality fitness equipment?
I'm a big believer in the premise that you get what you pay for. For example, our Precor treadmills may be higher priced but for a higher price you get the bells and whistles that make a difference. An example is a Precor treadmill which has a special suspension system which reduces the impact on your joints and back, so it feels like your workout is easier - allowing you to train more intensely. Quality products work with the body's natural movements, too - not against them. Quality equipment feels more like what you use in a gym.

If you buy low quality fitness equipment that is uncomfortable to use and breaks down, your routine could get interrupted, ruining your workout!

Q. How do you determine suitable fitness equipment for customers?
It's critical to find out what their fitness goal is - whether they are looking to achieve weight loss, general health and fitness or something different again. It is critical that a customer chooses the type of equipment they enjoy using. We can suggest the most effective piece of equipment (e.g. for weight loss) but if you don't enjoy using it you're not likely to get the results.

Workout World customers are fortunate that they can now enjoy online pre-approval via Workoutworld.com.au - so they can get pre-approved finance, visit a store and talk to us about their fitness goals. This means getting a great piece of equipment today without compromising on quality - and paying it off in regular, manageable amounts - making it easier for customers to get started on their fitness goals today!

Q. How important is having a fitness goal?
Extremely important. If you don't have a goal you don't have something to work towards. What's the point of exercising if you don't know what outcome you want? My advice to customers is to be realistic (about your goals) and keep setting new ones.
